Attractions

Morrison is home to the first important dinosaur find in the West in 1877. Dinosaur Ridge Park celebrates the discovery with displays in the visitor's center and on the park's trails. A visit to the town's Natural History Museum offers opportunities to touch real dinosaur bones and pieces of the rock formations, and to learn about the flora and fauna of the area. Morrison is also home to significant geological formations known as the Morrison Formation and the Dakota Group.

Morrison's biggest attraction is the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre. More than just a beautiful landmark that was once listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, this 868-acre natural amphitheatre is a favorite concert venue among such big name acts as No Doubt, Dave Matthews Band and the Grateful Dead. Music lovers from all across the country flock to this venue throughout the year just to witness a night of unforgettable performances by their favorite bands in a remarkable setting unlike any other. Red Rocks Park also includes spellbinding 360-degree views of the Great Plains and Denver that span over 200 miles and is home to a unique population of plants and animals, such as deer, foxes, and different bird species, many which can be spotted from the park's various hiking trails. While you're hiking in the park, be sure to make your way up to Creation Rock and Ship Rock, two of the park's biggest monoliths, towering at over 300 feet above the amphitheatre.

Jefferson County

Morrison is located in Jefferson County, where the Great Plains meets the Rocky Mountains. The first settlers came to the area in the late 1850s to mine for gold in the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Named for Thomas Jefferson, the county was one of the original 17 counties in the bill creating the Territory of Colorado, signed in 1861 by President James Buchanan.

Jefferson County's roots were in agriculture and mining. The county's 774 square miles are filled with lofty mountains, rolling grassland, towering pines, shady oaks, and clear streams. There are three national forests in Jefferson County: Pike, Roosevelt and Arapahoe. The two county parks are Chatfield State Recreation Area and Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Nearby Red Rocks Park offers trails, a visitor's center, and world-class performers on stage in the unique natural amphitheater.
